I am exteremely grateful that I am in a school, in an industry where more often then not people are self motivated. Yes, I know some people are not, even here, at the CIA some students are not self motivated, but that’s not my point.
It is easy to see when someone is self-motivated and does not need external motivation on a day-to-day basis. The passion that we posses for food motivates us to get through school and absorb as much as we can. Then when we get into the work place we will hopefully keep that self motivation up. However as we discussed in class, a lot of people need some form of external motivation. Maybe not as extreme as a car, but simple things. Looking forward to a day off after a rough week, seeing the joy on someones face after a catering event, or maybe it’s a guest, who instead of telling the server how great the food was, pokes their head into the kitchen to personally let us know. In a great kitchen where everyone is motivated we receive external motivation a lot more than we may realize, which, for me atleast, helps drive my inner motivation.
People like Daniel Pink and Dave Melton know how to properly give external motivation that will work. To me, just follow your heart, you cant ever go wrong.
