Talking about motivation in class made me think about my externship site. The head pastry chef is a CIA graduate so she has been through the program we are going through and understood the workload of the modules. She made it clear from the beginning that while she wanted us to get a good grade on our homework she didn’t agree with how that class itself was put together. She told us that she was going to work us through all the stations and that if there was anything we wanted to try that wasn’t already being done in the shop, we would try to fit it in on a slow day. Not having us stress so much about our homework being done on time and more about learning something new every time we walked into work was a motivation. They genuinely wanted all of the externs to leave learning a great deal more than they walked in with. Money wasn’t the motivation because we were being paid $100 a week. It was really that I had a voice in the kitchen and we got to help with all of the different wedding cakes and catering opportunities and see everything that was going on; they didn’t just stick us on the macaroon station and leave us there for 9 hours. Making sure the employees are motivated to work is important because I feel like if they were not so concerned with how everyone was feeling the work itself may have gotten sloppy and lost standard.
